I love seeing hats with great textures, love learning new knit stitches, and this seed stitch is so simple as a beginner teaching myself to knit, it was such a treat from the straight K1 repetition that it was fun to get in the rhythm of knit, purl, knit, purl……. oh so soothing and great for getting the hang of switching back and forth with ease.

Textured Seed Stitch Beanie Pattern

Yarn: Super Bulky Size 6 – personally, I love Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick.

Needles: 9mm, 16″ circular – personally, I love my bamboo Clover Takumi knitting needles

Long tail cast-on: 48 sts

  • Rows 1-7 Ribbing: K1, P1 around (48 sts)
  • Row 8 Ribbing: K1fb (to add an additional stitch for working the body) then P1, K1 around (49 sts)
  • Row 9: K1, *P1, K1* (49 sts)
  • Row 10: K the P’s, P the K’s (49 sts)
  • Rows 11-28: Repeat rows 9 and 10.
  • Row 29: K1, *K2tog* (25 sts)
  • Row 30: K1 around (25 sts)
  • Row 31: K1 around (25 sts)

Note: If you want your hat to be a bit more “slouchy” then add 4-5 more rows before Row 29 decrease. I’ve found regular beanies (to be adult sized) need to be 30-32 rows for my tension with this weight of yarn. And I add 4-6 rows, total 35-36 rows, for a decent length to be slouchy style.

When it’s the length you like:

Cut yarn leaving an 8″ tail then thread through the remaining loops and remove from needles, cinch closed and weave end to the inside to secure.

This pink hat is slouch-style with total 35 rows – Pink Color: Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick “Blossom”

What is the gauge for textured seed stitch beanie hat? I would like to use 10mm needles with #5 yarn so I want to make sure adult size with 48 CO stitches will be correct. Thank you

Hi Nancy, I just made this seed stitch hat with Size 6 Lion Brand Thick & Quick yarn and 10mm circular needles, the brim (8 rows) measures 2.25 inches.
      4” = 9 stitches
      4” = 7 rows
Hope this helps, I’d love to see your hat when completed! Thank you for visiting my site ❤️
