Free Knitting Pattern: Mommy Daddy and Me Hats (3 sizes included)

Free Knitting Patterns: Three hat sizes in this single article - one each for baby, beanie, and slouchie versions of this hat pattern. Also includes solid pattern of each size. So many colors and combinations to choose online or from your local yarn store!

These three hats are a set made for a special couple welcoming a first baby into their growing family. The tall slouchie hat is for Mama, the medium without pom is for Daddy, and the cute tiny hat is for new Baby. All pattern versions are below.

**I used Lion Brand Thick & Quick in Black and Grey Marble for all three.

Baby 6-9 months, 14″ circumference

Yarn: Super Bulky Size 6 – personally, I love Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick.

Needles: 9mm, 16″ circular – personally, I love my bamboo Clover Takumi knitting needles

To make a 1- Color, Solid Single Color Hat

  • Long tail cast-on: 32 sts
  • Rows 1-5 Ribbing: K1, P1 around (32 sts)
  • Rows 6-21 Body: K1 around (32 sts)
  • Row 22: K2, K2tog (24 sts)
  • Row 23: K2tog, repeat around (12 sts)

Cut an 8″ tail and thread through then cinch closed.

To make a 2-Color, Color Block Hat variation

First color

  • Rows 1-5 Ribbing
  • Rows 6-10: K1 around

Change to second color

  • Rows 11-21: K1 around
  • Row 22: K2, K2tog (24 sts)
  • Row 23: K2tog, repeat around (12 sts)

Cut an 8″ tail and thread through then cinch closed.


Basic teen/adult sized Mommy’s slouchie hat:

Yarn: Super Bulky Size 6 – personally, I love Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick

Needles: 9mm, 16″ circular (personally, I love my bamboo Clover Takumi knitting needles)

Knitting pattern:

For a single color solid adult slouchie hat:

  • Rows 1-8 Ribbing: K1, P1 around
  • Rows 9-35 (27 rows): K1 around
  • Row 35: K2tog around
  • Row 36: K1 around

For 2-Color, Colorblock Slouchie Hat

  • First color:
  • Long tail cast-on: 48 sts
  • Rows 1-8 Ribbing: K1, P1 around
  • Rows 9-18 (10 rows): K1 around
  • Change to Second color
  • Rows 19-34: K1 around
  • Row 35: K2tog around
  • Row 36: K1 around

Cut yarn leaving about 8″ tail, thread tail through loops to take off needles.

Pull tight, weave back through a few stitches and tighten. Thread end through center to inside of hat and weave end through a couple stitches inside, then cut off any excess yarn end.

Add optional pom and enjoy! Here’s the result:


BEANIE, No Slouch Version

For a single color solid adult hat, no slouch:

  • Rows 1-8 Ribbing: K1, P1 around
  • Rows 9-30: K1 around
  • Row 31: K2tog around
  • Row 32: K1 around
  •  

For 2-Color, Colorblock Adult Hat, no slouch

  • First color:
  • Long tail cast-on: 48 sts
  • Rows 1-8 Ribbing: K1, P1 around
  • Rows 9-15: K1 around
  • Change to Second color
  • Rows 16-30: K1 around
  • Row 31: K2tog around
  • Row 32: K1 around

Cut yarn leaving about 8″ tail, thread tail through loops to take off needles.

Pull tight, weave back through a few stitches and tighten. Thread end through center to inside of hat and weave end through a couple stitches inside, then cut off any excess yarn end.
